This is technically a smoothie, and it’s one I started making for my son Henry when he was about 2. Back when I worked in an office, I left at 7 am. Since toddlers are notoriously unpredictable and finicky, a smoothie was the best way I could think of to get him a good meal in after he picked at his toast at home. He could drink the smoothies in the car from his sippy cup, but he never knew it was really health food disguised as a milkshake. I still make these for my big kids whenever I have frozen bananas.
I always heard of people freezing their bananas whole, in the skin, with plans to make banana bread with them. I don’t like that idea. Besides looking unappealing, they seem like they’d be hard to peel when they’re frozen solid. So when the bananas on my shelf start to turn speckled, I peel and slice them into disks (about the size you’d slice over cereal). Then I store them in a plastic container in the freezer, and I can use as few or as many as I need to.
My goal for the Wake-Up Shake is to make it taste as much like a milkshake as possible while still keeping it healthy. You can always switch up the fruit, but I love the combination of peanut butter and banana. Also, if I make this for myself, I’d use skim or soy milk and definitely fat free yogurt. I also would skip the honey if I were making this for myself, either using a little stevia or nothing at all.
For the ground flax, I find the best thing to do is buy the seeds whole and grind them up using a grinder like this one. Flax is an ingredient I just started adding in the last year or so. But you can’t even taste it, and it adds good fats, protein, and fiber.
Total Time: 10 minutes
1 cup of low fat or fat free Greek yogurt (either plain or vanilla)
12 ounces of milk (any kind you like)
2 tablespoons of ground flax seeds
1 tablespoon of honey
3 tablespoons of peanut butter
2 cups of frozen banana slices
- This is pretty easy, but add the ingredient to a blender. Add the bananas last so they don’t start to freeze the milk. It will be harder to blend.
- Blend all ingredients together, and add more milk if you need to. For a little kid drinking from a sippy cup, you will probably need a little extra milk.
- Serve cold, and maybe with a dollop of Cool Whip on a special day.
